A buck boost transformer, often also referred to as an autotransformer, is a type of transformer that is capable of providing a continuously regulated voltage output from a single input voltage. These transformers allow the output voltage to be regulated from a few volts to more than 100% of the input voltage. They can be operated manually or electrically for different application requirements. Motorized systems are also available to meet larger ratings or OEM requirements.
Step-up and step-down transformers are suitable for industrial equipment, international traders, home users, research institutes, hotels, shopping malls and construction sites where different voltage conversion is required to ensure the normal operation and safe use of equipment by providing a stable power output.
A step-up/down transformer consists of copper windings on a laminated silicon steel toroidal core. Carbon brushes connected to the output rotate along the commutator track to draw voltage at any turn from zero volts to the maximum output voltage of the winding. A typical step-up/down transformer design provides stepless adjustment from 0 to 117% of the transformer input voltage. Models with extended windings are also available if higher output voltages are required.
Routine inspections, cleaning and operational checks are recommended once a year to ensure the performance and long term life of the step-up/down transformer. The only components that require occasional replacement under proper operation are the brushes. Since the brushes are made of highly durable carbon and are assumed to always maintain proper contact with the commutator, they are replaced less frequently.
