What is a single-phase transformer?

A single-phase transformer is a simple electrical device, mainly composed of a primary winding and a secondary winding. Its small size and low losses make it particularly suitable for use in low-voltage grids with small loads. Although it is a supplement to the three-phase power supply system, it has its own unique advantages.

First of all, a single-phase transformer uses less iron and copper than a three-phase transformer for the same capacity, 20% and 10% less respectively. When using the rolled iron core structure, its no-load loss can be reduced by more than 15%, which can reduce the cost of manufacturing and use.

Secondly, the use of single-phase power supply system can save 33% to 63% of conductors, which is significant for the construction of electric power infrastructure in the vast rural and urban areas of China.

In addition, the simple structure of single-phase transformers facilitates mass production and enables the introduction of new technologies and materials to help save energy and reduce emissions. It is lightweight and easy to install, and can be mounted directly on poles, flexibly supplying power to load centers and improving the quality of power supply.

The single-phase transformer is suitable for the following scenes:

Urban and rural areas: it can provide power for residents’ life, and several households can share one transformer.

Suburbs and market towns: small industries and residential power can coexist, with three-phase transformers for industries and single-phase transformers for residents.

Street lights and billboards: these loads do not require three-phase power; single-phase transformers are sufficient.

What is a three-phase transformer

A three-phase transformer is a transformer commonly used in the power industry and is a combination of three identical single-phase transformers. Each transformer has its own core and two windings, one for the high voltage coil and the other for the low voltage coil.

Through electromagnetic induction, the three-phase transformer can convert the input three-phase AC voltage into the required output voltage to meet the needs of different power systems or electrical equipment.

The main parts of a three-phase transformer include the core, windings and case. The core is usually made of silicon steel sheet, which can effectively concentrate the magnetic flux and reduce the energy loss; the winding is wound by high purity copper wire, which is divided into two kinds of high voltage and low voltage; the shell is used to protect the internal structure and provide insulation.

Fields of application

In the power system, three-phase transformers are used in the transmission and distribution system to convert high-voltage power into low-voltage power for safe and effective delivery to users.
In industry, three-phase transformers are used to drive electric motors, control voltage and supply power equipment.
In the civil sector, three-phase transformers are used for power supply, lighting and electrical equipment.

What is three-phase electricity?

Three-phase electricity is made up of three wires that have the same voltage and frequency, but are 120 degrees out of phase. A circuit using a three-phase generator is called a three-phase circuit and is usually denoted by U, V, and W. The voltage between the phases is called line voltage, usually 380V; the voltage between the phases and the center line is called phase voltage, usually 220V.

Three-phase power is characterized by three “fire wire”, which are separated by 120 degrees, the voltage between any two lines is equal. Connected to this three-phase power transformer is called a three-phase transformer, such as the neighborhood lighting transformer, input three-phase 10 kilovolts of electricity, the output of three-phase 380 volts, each phase of the ground voltage is 220 volts. Single-phase power is the connection of any one wire to ground, and the standard voltage is 220 volts.

Three-phase transformers can provide three-phase power or power equipment that requires single-phase power.

If three-phase power is required, three single-phase transformers can also be connected to realize this.
