What is a control transformer and how it works

What is a control transformer?

Control transformer is a kind of equipment that converts AC electrical energy into a specific voltage level, and it mainly realizes the voltage transformation by changing the winding ratio of main and secondary windings. Control transformer has an important role in the power system, can adjust, control the voltage level, to meet the transmission, distribution and electricity and other aspects of the demand for a variety of different voltage levels.

The role of control transformer

A control transformer is used to change the AC voltage setting and consists of an iron core and a coil. It not only changes the AC voltage but also the impedance, and the current when the designed power is not exceeded. The role of control transformer is different in different circumstances.

1. Power lines fed over long distances, in order to reduce line losses, the power from the power plant is first boosted to tens of thousands of volts (e.g., 11KV), and then reduced (e.g., 220V) when it reaches its destination.

2. In electronic amplification circuits, impedance matching is required in order to achieve z-small transmission energy consumption between two amplifications, and transformer connections can change the impedance.

3. In electric welding, the current required between the electrode and the weldment is high (tens to hundreds of amperes), but the voltage is small (a few volts). A welding machine is a transformer that turns high voltage (say 220V) into low voltage. Without changing the power, a large current is produced at the output.

4. Sometimes, when different voltages are needed for an environment, the transformer can be made multi-winding or mid-xin tapped. Thus various voltages are produced.

5. In an AC regulator, the number of turns in the output coil is changed immediately to regulate the output voltage.

How to wire a control transformer?

Input Voltage Selection: There are two common input voltages for control transformers, 220 V and 380 V. According to the voltage provided by the circuit, connect the corresponding terminals. If it is 220V input, connect the terminals of 0 and 220; if it is 380V input, connect the terminals of 0 and 380.

Output Voltage Selection: Depends on the voltage required by the load. For example, if 220V output is required, one wire is connected to the 220 terminal, and the other wire is connected to the common terminal of 0.

Specific connection: when inputting 380V, you can choose any two phase wires to be connected to the terminals of 380 and 0 respectively. If the desired output is 6.3V, 12V, 24V or 36V, connect 0 and the corresponding voltage terminal as required.

Note: Wiring should be strictly in accordance with the labeled voltage level operation, connecting the wrong voltage may lead to incorrect output voltage, or even burn the transformer.

Application Scenario

Control transformers are commonly used in machine tools, mechanical equipment in the lighting, signal lights and other places, the main role is to step down the voltage.

Simple summary is: input to the corresponding voltage (220V or 380V), output to the required voltage (6.3V, 12V, 24V, etc.), wiring should be according to the label to avoid connecting the wrong.
