What is the difference between dry type and oil-immersed transformers

Dry-type transformers and oil-immersed transformers are the two main types of power transformers, and although they both have a circuit system consisting of an iron core and windings, there are distinct differences in design and function.

Core differences

Cooling medium

♦ Dry-type transformers: use air or gas (e.g. SF6) for cooling, usually by casting epoxy resin or using special insulating materials to cover the windings.
Oil-immersed transformer: uses transformer oil as the cooling and insulating medium, with the windings and core submerged in the oil for heat dissipation and insulation.

Main differences

Appearance

♦ Dry-type transformers: the core and coils are directly visible.
♦ Oil-immersed transformer: only the shell is visible, the interior is submerged in oil.

Lead forms

♦ Dry-type transformers: Mostly silicone rubber bushings are used.
♦ Oil-immersed transformers: usually with porcelain bushings.

Capacity and voltage

♦ Dry-type transformer: usually used for power distribution, capacity is usually below 1600KVA, voltage below 10KV, individual models up to 35KV.
♦ Oil-immersed transformers: can cover all capacities and voltage levels, including the extra-high voltage 1000KV lines under construction in China.

Insulation and heat dissipation

♦ Dry-type transformers: insulated with resin, relying on natural air-cooling or fan cooling.
♦ Oil-immersed transformers: heat is dissipated by circulating insulating oil, which carries away heat to a radiator.

♦ Oil-immersed transformer: relatively simple process, lower cost, greater dosage.

Application suggestions

● Price: dry-type transformer is more expensive, suitable for high demand occasions.
● Capacity: oil-immersed transformers are more suitable for high-capacity applications.
● Installation location: dry-type transformers are recommended for integrated buildings and densely populated areas; oil-immersed transformers are suitable for independent substation sites.
● Climatic conditions: oil-immersed transformers are more suitable in humid and hot areas, while dry-type transformers need to be equipped with forced air-cooling equipment.

Model difference

♦ Dry-type transformer: common models include SC (epoxy resin casting), SCR (non-epoxy resin solid insulation), SG (open type), Zhengxi QSG.
♦ Oil-immersed transformers: common models include S9, S11, S13, S15 (amorphous alloy), SH15 (amorphous alloy), as well as with on-load voltage regulation function of SZ11 and SZ13.

Which transformer to choose needs to be evaluated according to actual environmental conditions, installation location and power demand.
